Ex-Flyers Score, Present Flyers Don't Score

Ex-Flyers James Van Riemsdyk (JVR), Jeff Carter, and Joffrey Lupul are all among the top goal scorers in the NHL early this season. Van Riemsdyk and Lupul each have 5 goals for Toronto in 6 games while Jeff Carter has 4 goals for the Los Angeles Kings and three shootout goals in 5 games.

The Flyers have 5 total goals from forwards in 6 games: 2 from Brayden Schenn, 1 each from Vincent Lecavalier, Max Talbot, and Tye McGinn (in his first game after he was called up from Adirondack in the AHL).

They have 3 goals from defensemen: 1 each from Braydon Coburn, Luke Schenn, and Erik Gustafsson (in his first game of the year after he was activated for the first time).

The Flyers traded James Van Riemsdyk to Toronto for defenseman Luke Schenn. Jeff Carter was traded to Columbus for right wing Jakub Voracek along with a 2011 first round pick which they used to select center Sean Couturier and a 2011 third round pick which they used to select center Nick Cousins. Joffrey Lupul was part of the blockbuster trade the Flyers made with the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Chris Pronger. The Flyers also sent defenseman Luca Sbisa and two first round picks to Anaheim.

Luke Schenn is one of the top hitters in the NHL game but his overall performance has not been exceptional and the Flyers defense has been an Achilles heel for the team.

Voracek has been promising as an offensive player and catalyst, he had a good year in 2013 shortened season while Couturier is a solid defensive player with offensive potential. Cousins scored over 100 points last year in the OHL and is presently on the Flyers AHL affiliate team.

Lupul was and is a solid offensive player but was deemed expendable for a player of Pronger's stature although the Flyers paid dearly for the trade especially when Pronger suffered the career-ending injury.
